REGULAR WHEELS - TYPE A BOXES
1953-54
Released
in
1953,
this
box
type
is
the
very
first
in
which
Matchbox
models
were
issued.
It
consists
of
a
yellow
carton
with
the
words
"Matchbox
Series"
in
arch,
with
"A
Moko
LESNEY"
in
scroll.
Note
that "Moko" appears in script.
Only seven models were issued with this hard-to-find box type and they are models 1A to 7A.
MAJOR VARIABLES
There are no major variables for A boxes. There is only one major type with no sub types unlike B, D, E and F boxes.
SIZES
“A” boxes only came in two different sizes:
- 1 (57 X 22 X 38 mm)
- 2 (57 X 26 X 38 mm)
TOP AND BOTTOM
All A boxes have a dark blue top and a black bottom. In the listing provided on this site, all TOP/BOTTOM columns only mention “Blue/Black”.

For every model available with an A Box, every major variation will be illustrated with a front picture of the box, according to one of the major variables discussed on the present page. The first set of
characters in the variation number is the box type, followed by the number of the variation and a letter for the minor variation.
