GENERAL INFO
71A is a very interesting model when it comes to boxes. Released in late 1959, it’s one of those models that had two different sets of drawing on the B boxes released in both B4 and B5 sub-types.
The first variation shows the model in red with yellow wheels and red hubs. The second version has the model in red also, bit wheels and hub are yellow. The second box has the model a little bigger too. Model numbers are slightly inside the scroll on the first major variation and outside it in the second. The first B5 box also has the NEW MODEL (while the b4 doesn’t!), and the first 3 boxes are all in capital letters on end flap except the last B5 box.
Lesney skipped the C type box for 71A, so there is only one D1 box available as 71B Jeep Gladiator replaced the mode in the range.
RARITY
The D box is definitely a rare box that is hard to come by. It can fetch higher prices than the model itself, and certainly 75-100% of any other boxes for this model. The “NEW MODEL” is certainly another interesting box to find, although never as rare as the D1.
