The 70A Estate Car has some interesting facts about it. Being released first in a B4 box with model name in capital on end flaps, it was quickly replaced with a B5 box. Even though the B4 box was the first box ever for this model, it’s the first B5 ox that got the “NEW MODEL” mention on the end flap (no B4 boxes ever got it anyway!). The model name was still in capital letters. Those two variations’ drawing shows a small model with model number closer to the model. A second drawing was then made, showing a bigger model and model numbers farther from the model. This drawing was combined with two different B5 end flaps; the first has the model name in capital letters, but with “NEW MODEL”. The second has the model number in small letters.
70A is also one of those models without a C box. Lesney most probably had an overstock of B boxes, thus the short-lived C type was never done.
The 70A has both D1 and D2 boxes, showing the model in its normal color, which are turquoise and yellow.
All boxes are size 3 and they all indicate “Thames Estate Car” (in capital or small letters) on the end flaps.
The B4 and “NEW MODEL” B5 boxes are probably the most desriable, without actually being very difficult to find. The rest are quite common boxes.
