GENERAL INFO

An interesting model for boxes, 58B has 7 different variations including 4 major ones. Released first in a D1 box in 1962, the end flaps show “NEW MODEL” in the classic D1 fashion. The end flap mentions “DROTT EXCAVATOR”, which will remain even for later E boxes.

The interesting fact about the D boxes is that there are 3 distinct patterns, similar to the one fond for 43B. The first box shows the model number without serifs, as do most D1 boxes. The second box, also a D1, has a very small model number on front and back. Then a 3rd major variation shows the model numbers in the normal D2 fashion, with serifs.

The first and second major variations have Black and blue top and bottom, and so does the first issue of the 3rd major variation. Then, top and bottom combinations were released in blue/blue and light blue/light blue patterns.

The E box was released in E3 and E4 types. All boxes are in size 4. Whether it’s D or E type, the model depicted is red with green threads and black rollers. While D boxes are showing the model facing right, the E boxes show it facing left.

RARITY

It’s hard to tell which of the D boxes is the less common, but the third version (D2) is probably the easiest to find. E boxes are a bit harder to come by, with E3 being the rarest. None of the boxes are, however, highly sought-after pieces.
