42A Evening New Van is certainly one of the model with the most box variations, with twelve different ones.

Released in 1957, it initially available in a B2, size 2 box, showing the model in yellow as well as wheels and hubs. The roof blade is red with white lettering and advertising on side is in red. The second variation was also released in a B2, size 3 box, but it shows the wheels in black, the hubs in yellow, the roof blade is still red, but the lettering is black, and the advertising on side has disappeared. The front grille is now red. The same box is also in B3 sub-type.

First and second artwork:

The box being a bit short, it was decided to release the model in size 3, and the latest artwork was used first in its original size, so the blue rectangle has been used. The following box would use the same approach, except that this time, the first drawing found on the first variation was used.

The drawing of the second artwork will be stretched to fit on a size 3, B4 box. But a new design was then done, different from first 2: Model in yellow, red blade with white lettering, advertising on side (in black), black wheels, red hubs, but with a black dot inside.

This artwork would be used on B4 and B5 boxes. Interesting note: the first B4 box has the model name written “Evening News” Van, while the second B4 as well as the B5 box don’t have the “quotes”.

Followed two variations of C boxes. They essentially reprise the last two variations used on B4/B5 boxes. That include the “Evening News” on end flaps, with and without the “quotes”.

Finally, D1 and D2 boxes were made, showing the model in its normal colors, with grey wheels. End flaps state the model as “Evening News” Van.

RARITY

The first B4 box is a bit harder to find, although shall not be considered as rare.
